How to Get Started with Ultimate Frisbee in South Florida: A Beginner’s Guide

South Florida covers a large area, from Palm Beach all the way to the keys, so feel free to skip around to the areas that seem close to you.

What's Ultimate Frisbee

Ultimate Frisbee is typically a 7-on-7 co-ed game played on grass & turf.  The objective of the game is to pass it to your teammates until one of them catches it in the end-zone.  Ultimate Frisbee is different from most other sports in that:

  • You have to pass to a teammate to score (unlike basketball, soccer, hockey)
  • Self-officiating culture
  • Strong participation for both genders at beginner and advanced levels

What To Bring

Ultimate Frisbee is often played on grass or turf fields, and you typically should bring:

  • A white shirt/jersey
  • A non-white or colored shirt/jersey (many call it a dark)
  • Cleats
  • Water

If you don't have cleats running shoes can suffice though it may cause some slipping as you run around.  Some people prefer soccer cleats, others football/lacrosse cleats, it just depends what comfortable for you!

Broward

In Broward, SFLUltimate currently runs a Free Summer Beginner Pick Up that's welcome for you to come and play right in Plantation. Further north a pretty active group is the Pompano Beach.

Further southwest in Doral there's a game.

Miami Dade

Miami has tons of games, from Saturdays at Continental Park to weekdays at Armbrister Park to early mornings (think 6:15am) in Key Biscayne. Typically on Tuesdays for most of the year the Peacock Park League runs games at Peacock Park for a fun mixed league.

Palm Beach

Palm Beach's scene offers a competitive game at PGA National Park and a beach game at Singer Island that varies in time based on the time of year (due to sunset differences).

Club Ultimate

In South Florida we currently offer a men's open team through El Niño and a women's team called Fiasco.

Women

There is a Women's chat where there are tryouts for Fiasco.

Youth

Prior to COVID the youth scene featured two teams that competed yearly at Janus, a tournament in January, going all the way to states.  But since then this has taken a big hit and we're in the process of rebuilding.

College Ultimate

There's a good group of college teams, such as the University of Miami's Men's and Women's Ultimate teams, the Nova Southeastern University team.

Beach

During the winter and early spring, one of the best things about South Florida is playing on the beach. SFL Ultimate typically hosts a winter beach league in parks located in Broward.

Besides hatters (which are one-off tournaments organized by local teams) SFLUltimate runs a tournament called Beach Bash which brings in teams from out of town to join.

Organized by South Florida Ultimate Inc., a local non-for-profit.
